Wind Actions On Structures

Wind actions on structures are a core competence of Svend Ole Hansen ApS offering consultancy services in all areas concerning wind actions on onshore and offshore structures. Theoretical calculations, wind tunnel tests and full-scale experiments are carried out.

Wind actions have a great influence on building designs and on designs of other civil engineering structures – onshore as well as offshore. Many structures or parts of structures that fail do so because of inadequate thoughts given to wind action at the design stage. The determination of wind actions by using only structural codes and general guidelines give very conservative values for many types of structures, e.g. high rise structures and structures with very complex geometry. Wind tunnel test with a scale model of a structure is a powerful tool to determine less conservative and more precise wind actions for a specific structure. The outcome of using the wind tunnel test results in the design of a structure may be in form of more slender and economic structures.

Apart from static and dynamic wind loads, aero elastic effects in form of vibrations induced by vortex shedding, galloping and flutter are also part of the service portfolio. The treatment of aero elastic effects requires, besides aerodynamic knowledge, thorough analyses and understanding of structural dynamics.

Svend Ole Hansen is chairman of the code committee revising the Eurocode EN 1991-1-4 on wind actions.
