Measurement Capabilities

Svend Ole Hansen ApS has an extensive experience in wind tunnel testing and in a wide range of field measurements. The main focus in the measuring assignments carried out over the years has been structural response (acceleration and strain) and wind parameters (wind velocity, wind direction, temperature, barometric pressure and humidity). But also in other areas Svend Ole Hansen ApS has carried out measurements, e.g. measurements in water (flow velocity and temperature). Furthermore, visualisation tests have been carried out in the wind tunnel using helium bubbles, smoke and glass beads.

Wind tunnel measurements

A wide range of wind tunnel tests are carried out on all kinds of structures and setups. Some tests have been carried out many times and follows standard procedures, e.g. calibration of anemometers. Other tests call for alternative setup customized for the actual project. Svend Ole Hansen ApS finds the required setups for each individual case and carries out wind tunnel tests on existing scale models of structures as well as on scale models customized for the actual tests. A selection of the wind tunnel tests often carried out is presented below.

Wind environment

  • visual tests using helium bubbles, smoke and glass beads
  • wind velocity measured by hotwires in specific points on the scale model

Wind actions on structures

  • response of scale model measured by a flexible balance
  • pressure on scale model measured by pressure tabs

Wind actions on cable-supported bridges

  • static and dynamic tests with section models suspended in rods or springs connected to force transducers

Field measurements

Field measurements are carried out on all kinds of building structures in all environments. A typical application is investigation of wind-induced response of lattice structures and chimneys. The response of the structure is measured as accelerations and/or strains and the weather conditions are verified by contemporary measurements of wind velocity and wind direction. The measurements may go on for several weeks or months in order to investigate the structural response in different weather conditions.

Another typical application is monitoring of vibrating floors. Many office environments have comfort problems regarding vibrating floors due to human load. An effective and economic remedy to vibrating structures is often installation of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD). Svend Ole Hansen ApS has great experience in development and installation of TMD.

Several of Svend Ole Hansen’s staff have taken relevant offshore safety courses and are able to attend offshore installations and perform measurements with very short notice.
